More roles went up, and more came down
In the week ending October 25, the 161 large employers in our census posted 13,080 new US roles, up from 8,453 the week before. They also took down 6,975 postings, up from 4,279. Open postings rose to 57,143 from 54,090.
Both numbers moved at once. More roles are appearing, and more are disappearing. If you saved a posting last week, check it's still up before you spend an evening on it.
Two limits matter here. First, 24 boards were only partly read this week, so their counts are floors ("at least"). Second, a partly read board closes nothing in our count. All 6,975 closures come from boards read in full, so the true number taken down is at least that.
Open roles were also a little younger. Among postings with an exact date, the median age fell to 54 days from 60, and the share up more than 90 days fell to 21.1% from 22.1%. Workday boards say only "30+ days", so their postings are left out of these age figures.
By kind of job
- Engineering: 2,237 new, up from 1,255, and 1,195 closed, up from 715. 12,311 open. The typical stated pay midpoint was $190,400.
- Retail & stores: 2,593 new, up from 2,053, and 640 closed, up from 239. The median open role here is 10 days old, the youngest of any group.
- Manufacturing & trades: 873 new, up from 582.
- Sales: 630 new, up from 380.
- Data & analytics: 192 new, up from 106. Even so, 34.3% of its dated open roles have been up more than 90 days.
- Nursing & clinical: 528 new, up from 352. 72.8% of its dated open roles have been up more than 60 days.
Senior roles moved too. Director postings saw 271 new, up from 201, and 227 closed, up from 137. Their typical stated pay midpoint was $235,000. Executive roles saw 136 new, up from 79, and 145 closed, up from 90.
Across all postings, the typical stated pay midpoint was $162,000, down from $167,500. We can only measure pay on boards whose job list shows it. That covered 29,022 postings, and 39.7% of them stated a range.
Employers with the most notable moves
These boards were read in full both weeks:
- AT&T: 284 new, up from 46, and 405 closed, up from 47.
- Boeing: 189 new, up from 34, and 318 closed, up from 60. Open roles fell to 483 from 552.
- UPS: 618 closed, up from 361. Open roles fell to 947 from 1,120.
- PepsiCo: 495 closed, up from 255.
- Wells Fargo: 550 new and 622 closed, the most closures of any employer.
These boards were only partly read, so each figure is a floor. A partly read board also shows a different slice on each read, which makes swings there less certain:
- Walmart: at least 1,783 new, up from 1,051, and at least 3,381 open, up from 2,022.
- Northrop Grumman: at least 612 new, up from 152.
- Lockheed Martin: at least 563 new, up from 177.
- Booz Allen Hamilton: at least 325 new, up from 6.
- Starbucks: at least 871 new, down from 1,121.
Reposts, where a role comes down and goes back up, nearly doubled to 2,295 from 1,204. The most were at Lowe's (281), Walmart (277) and T-Mobile (191), all partly read boards. A repost is a signal worth noticing, not proof that a job isn't real.
One board stands out for age. At Palantir, 88% of its 241 open roles have been up more than 90 days, and the median open role is 452 days old.
These figures cover the 161 employers in the census, not all employers.
What to do with this
If a role you want has been open more than 90 days, send the recruiter a short, direct note before you apply. A role that has been open that long may still be unfilled.
Carbon Dean checks these same career sites every six hours by default and brings job seekers the new roles that fit their search.
